Landscape Watercolor Painting - 10 x 20 inches

This is  a 10 x 20 inches watercolor painting on Strathmore 140 lb watercolor paper.  Strathmore paper is made in the US by Strathmore Artist Paper in MN and they have an artist enewsletter you can sign up under the Artist Newsletter column in their web site………..  www.strathmoreartist.com

Last night I have made a sketch plan on the larger 10 x 20 inches watercolor paper and started the watercolor painting by splattering on the top sky section and two of the trees.   With a mixture of Winsor and Newton Ultramarine Blue and Alizarin Crimson, the sky was painted in layers of the different color mixture while other areas are protected.  Several layers of watercolor paint was splatter onto the paper while each layer is completely dry.

Landscape Watercolor Painting – Value Sketch

Watercolor Painting Blog - Value Sketch

I want to talk about linear sketch and value sketch in watercolor painting.  On the image above, the top one is a pencil sketch called a linear sketch or linear plan.  I have done  this on a relative small piece of watercolor paper about 3.25 x 6.5 inches.  The value sketch or value plan is done next after the linear sketch.  It places the value in the painting before the color is being applied.  I have done this using pencil but it can also be done using a brush where one color, usually black or sepia is being applied.  Using the pencil, I can have the whole painting broken down into three different values.  The first one is the lightest value which are areas that are void of any pencil marks on the watercolor paper.  The second value is middle grey which is represtented by hatches of the pencil in one direction.  The third one is dark value and is represented by cross hatch of the pencil on the paper.  All the other values during painting should fall in between these three.  Once I established the values, I know the lightest and the darkest areas in the watercolor painting before I even have paint on the paper.  Another important thing about doing the value sketch is knowing what the value is next to each object.   Value sketch is a good exercise to do before we paint the big painting and I would do it even before the linear sketch plan is being transfer to the final watercolor paper.  Two or more value sketch is important to know and experiement the different tonal values befeore I paint.

Last night I have finished the landscape watercolor painting.  The study although it was not big, only 10 x 15 inches, it gives me a lot of fun and I like doing more using the splattering technique.  I like to try my hand on water mixable oil like the ones by Winsor and Newton and see how I like it.  Anyone with experience with transition from Watercolor to Water Mixable Oil?  Comments will be most welcome.

This little study of landscape watercolor teaches me a lot about values and value sketch.  I should have done a value sketch before I start doing this study becasue different value is placed next to each other with the same subject matter of either grass or tree.  If the value of these side by side objects are the same, the viewer would not tell a difference between them.  Most important is light and shadow which creates a great difference in value in between them.  This by the way is a 10 x 15 watercolor study on cold press watercolor paper.

I would like also to mention two more artist supply where materials can be purchased if you are looking for artist supplies in  Canada.  They are Currys Art Stores in the east coast of Canada and Opus Framing and Art Supplies serving the west coast of Canada.  Both has excellent mail order divison where you can order your supplies on line.

Painting Blog – New Watercolor Landscape

Watercolor Landscape Painting

Started a new watercolor painting last night after I finished the painting the pebbles.  This is a new watercolor landscape painting on Strathmore 400 series which is a 140 lb Watercolor Paper available at many artist material supply such as Blick Art materials or Cheap Joes Art Stuff.

I have decided to do this painting with mostly splattering watercolor technique.  I started off mixing some light green watercolor paint for the large tree on the top row started on the left side.  With tape masking the rest of the areas I do not want any paint, I begin with painting the top reight area with my watercolor mixture.  Layers are left dry before another darker or different color layer is being put on top.  A variety of color is used and mostly are from Winsor and Newton Artist Watercolor tubes.  Colors used were Windsor Green, Hooker’s Green, Prussian Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Winsor Blue, Winsor Lemon, Winsor Green, Yellow Ochre and Alizarin Crimson.

Pebbles Watercolor - 15 x 22 inches

Finally I have finished the pebbles watercolor painting and I must say this 15 x 22 watercolor painting have been using a lot of my energy and time.  During painting this watercolor, I have learned about watercolor mixing, taping and spattering as well as most importantly, patience.  There might be areas that need further adjustments in color, shade or detail but at this point in time I think I will leave it and look at it for a while.  Then I will go back to it and probable make some changes.

Hope you like the final result.  Any comments are most welcome.
