Ink Resist Art Technique - Washing away the Ink

Ink resist art techinque involves the use of permanent black ink, tempera paint, watercolor paint, gouache paint or acrylic paint.  Ink is being wash away using a water bath as show above.  With a little bit of scrubbing with a large brush, most of the ink is being washed away with another change of water.

Ink Resist Art Technique - Painting being soak into water with ink almost gone.

The above photo shows the ink almost all gone.  Because I have used a green tempera paint as the layer between the paper and the permanent ink, a faint green underpainting is seen due to the fact that not the entire green color can be removed by washing.  A white tempera paint should be used if you want no background shade to be left on the ink resist painting.

Ink Resist Art Technique - Painting left to dry completely

At this stage, the watercolor paper is lifted out of the water bath and hang up to dry.  As show above, where the frisket was, a permanent black outline is shown.   Other areas of india ink and tempera has been washed away.  There is also hints of black shades on some areas of the painting which is normal and is a characteristic of the ink resist art technique.  If watercolor is used after it is dry, some of these black area will show underneath the watercolor paint.

After the paper is dried completely, watercolor, guache or acrylic paint can be applied.

Ink resist watercolor - Washing the Ink away using water bath

Ink resist art techinque involves the use of permanent black ink, tempera paint, watercolor paint, gouache paint or acrylic paint. After the permanent ink and all the ares are dry, the watercolor paper is put into a water bath to wash away the ink and tempera color.  The ink other than the ones on the lines can be removed because it has been painted on top of the tempera paint.

Watercolor ink resist - Washing away the ink with brush

I have my watercolor paper inside a stainless steel pan which I got from my darkroom.  You can use any plastic tray the size of the paper or even do it in a bath tub.  I use a large brush for washing away the ink.

After several change of water, most of the ink is washed away and permanent lines (where the frisket was) beginning to show.   The ares on the corners need more work and a few more change of water should do the trick.

Daily Watercolor - Ink Resist - Dance Passion 1

Ink resist art involves the use of watercolor, gouache, tempera or acrylic paints.  I have stared a new watercolor using ink resist technique.  I choose the subject dance passion and the ink reisist painting is representative so I think it might fit into the technique of ink resist.  First I choose a 140 lb cold press watercolor paper becuase of it’s durability to scrubbing and washing.  A heavier 300 lb watercolor paper can also be used.  The outline is done with a pencil and then tempera ink is to be painted on the watercolor paper except on the lines that you want to leave black.  I use green tempera paint because that is the only color I have.  I think the best color would be white tempera becuase it will not leave a faint color background after the ink has been washed away.  I will use this method of leaving the lines blank for the lower part of the painting and use a different method for the upper part.  I will tell you about this other method in my next post.  It involves using drawing gum or liquid frisquet.

I have done two different things in watercolor last night.  I have put on some minor details in the Ballroom Dancing painting and also darken the shadow area under the ballroom dancers.  I have put it up on an easel and look at it every day as I walk by and still are not too happy with the painting.  I don’t know what it is yet but I will come back to it later on when I find out.  Appreciate any help from the comments.

Watercolor Painting - Three Pears 15 x 20 inches

Besides that I have started another painting.  It is three pears on a 15 x 20 inches Strathmore cold press watercolor paper.  I started off with a light pencil sketch of the pears on the watercolor paper.  Because of the time I already spend on revising the Ballroom Painting and the sketch of this new painting, it was late in the night.  I cleaned my palette but forgot to change the brush cleaning water.  So as soon as I dip into the water and put some on the palette, I can see that it is a dirty grey.   So I found out that you have to replace your jar with clean water often or have several jars of water before you start.  It is important to have a clean palette and clean water always.

I have been putting aside the ballroom dancing watercolor for a while because I have not decided what to paint on the background.  It is not an easy decision and finially I have enough courage to start and try to finish it with a wash of blue watercolor for the background.  I started to paint from the top with misture of French Ultramarine Blue.  As I painted towords the middle, other blue like Cerulean Blue is added to the wash.  I need to work quickly around the ballroom dancers with the background wash.  It is typical of watercolor paint and it is unpredicable in areas of washes.  Finally I came to do the lower area in which there is shadows and I added more French Ultramarine, Alizarin Crimson and a touch of Prussian Blue to the mixture.  Before it is dry, the shadow was painted several layers of wash to achieve the desire intensity.  It is a 15″ x 20.5 inches watercolor painting on cold press watercolor paper.  There is still much detail to be done on the watercolor and will try to finish it in the new year.   Thank you for visiting dailywatercolor.com this year and have a Happy New Year everyone.

Watercolor Painting Daily – Ballroom Dancing

I have continued with my ballroom dancing watercolor painting over the weekend.  Have painted the man’s head and a did another couple of watercolor washes on his ballroom gown.  His shoes and the ladies gown under the tail of the man’s gown is also painted.   The shoes and the gown probably will be needing some more watercolor layers.  What I am really thinking  about now is what kind of background I should give to this painting.  There are lots of options and I need to come up with one that compliments the subject and yet it will let it stand out.

This is the progress on the 15  x 20.5 inches ballroom dancing watercolor I have started a week ago.  I have continue to apply another layer of watercolor wash on the man’s ballroom gown.  I have learned from my previous night that when I do a large wash, I need to mix up enough paint for the whole wash, which I did this time.  I mixed Ultramarine Blue and Payne’s Grey, all of Windsor and Newton Watercolor for the man’s gown.  It was much easier and quicker to apply and I have enough time to use different shade of the mixture for the various part of the gown.  I also did the ladies legs and the shoes which is rather easy compare to the big area of the man’s gown.  I have also painted the ladies face and body.  It was a challenge especially for the facial expression which I know  is very important for the whole watercolor painting.  So far I am happy with the result and might need some minor correction later.  After I look at it at a distance, the color on the ladies arm and her beautiful dress extension seems be too similar and I need to address that also at a later date.

I have further worked on the ballroom dancing watercolor painting last night.  As you can see, I have added a wash on the gentlemans dancing gown.  What I learned is that I should prepare a large watercolor wash instead of trying to mix more in the middle of painting it.  I did that in a flat wash which uses more color than other washes.  Because I need to keep the edges wet between washes, I have a hard time doing that and mixing more paint.  In other areas of the gown, I have use gradated wash so that the final result will show variation of the dark color instead of one flat pure grey black ballroom gown.
