Toward the Sunrise - Watercolor Landscape

More work done on the Toward the Sunrise watercolor painting.  I tried doing a gradated wash on the paper so that it acts like an underpainting before I spatter on the diluted but not mixed watercolor from the tube.  I found that it works better in certain areas and I need to be more aware  on the tones and values of the adjacent areas if I use this underpainting method.  The color nees to be the same or very similar and it will afffect the overall value of the areas to be painted.  Exploring all these possibilities will certainly give me more options as my style is developed and fine tuned.  Tonight I will try to finish this watercolor painting and will go on and explore some other different application of watercolor paint on paper.

Toward the Sunrise

Started a watercolor painting today on cold press watercolor paper.  It is a landscape watercolor painting and the subject is sunrise with the title – Toward the Sunrise.  Started by pencil drawing the design.  A small value sketch can be made in this stage as to what the values should be put in for different painting areas.   I have decided to use the same method of watercolor painting because I like the result.  This time though I am going to experiment with my watercolor wash a bit before the splattering is to be put on.  I have been doing the sky and a few clouds and mountains using straightly watercolor splattering but tomorrow and over the weekend,  I shall try using a flat or gradated wash before I put on the splattering.  I like to compare the result of the two watercolor technique and notice any difference.

Landscape watercolor - Final 7 x 22 in

Finished the watercolor painting last night and with a tiltle water and beyond.  I might want to change it to anyother name sometime late because I found that a painting title needs to reflect the mood and subject of the painting.  Abstract painting is the hardest for me to title but it is the most fun.  Like a father naming a new born, for me naming a painting should be full of excitment and joy.  It should done with a creative mind and with enthusium and passion.  The painting can also be title with something mysterious to evoke a sense of wondering for the viewer.  Paintings can also be named with emotion.

Landscape watercolor painting

I have continued with more of the landscape watercolor last night.  I was wondering when I do this watercolor that if I can use this watercolor technique on other subjects.  I will give it a try when I get to do the next watercolor painting.  I like to try using a brush thogh.  There is a lot of difference between doing it with a brush than with other tools but I should try other ones just for experiment before I can find my own style.  Still experimenting and hopefully I can have my own artistle expressive style not before long.

Landscape Watercolor Painting

Continue with this landscape watercolor painting last night doing the rocks and trees.  It is lots of fun doing this kind of watercolor painting makes me slow down and learn several different aspects in watercolor.  One thing I learn from this exercise is to take my time in my painting.  Doing a painting quick sometimes has opposite efficts and because watercolor painting is to leave blank the areas you want to have less watercolor paint, planning is very important.  Good planning in sketching and the value before I apply the color is as important as applying the color on the watercolor paper.  Patients is also necessary to let the watercolor paint to dry between layers.  I also learn the amount of water in my brush is very important as well.  It affects the intensity of the watercolor as well as the saturation of the watercolor paint.  Also keep a clean wash bucket of water is just as important and I learn not to be lazy and change water often.

Landscape watercolor painting 7 x 22 inches

I have started a landscape watercolor painting last night.  It is a very odd size measuring 7 x 22 inches.  I have decided to try this landscape watercolor painted using the splatter method and in high key.  I started with a pencil drawing outline of the picture on cold press watercolor paper and tape the watercolor paper onto a board with painters green tape which can be easily removed after.  Then I mask sections of the drawing and cut out the areas I want to do.  I splatter watercolor paint onto the areas in layers and leave each layter to dry before I proceed with another layer.  The color I use is straightly from the tube only diluted with clean water.  I let this pure watercolor from the tube dries before I put on another layer so there is many layers one on top of each other before the section is finished.  Once the finaly layer is completely dry, I cover back this area and go on to the next.

I believe I have finished fine tuning my landsccape watercolor last night and here is the result.  The first one is the progress and changes I have made earlier and the second one shows the final painting.  I have changed the value of the path by adding more darker tones and also some minor adjustment of colors in the various area of the painting.

Landscape watercolor painting

This 10 x 20 inches watercolor painting has been painted but there is much to be corrected.  First of all there is a new experiment of putting on watercolor using colors without mixing.  I try to use paint out from the tube and put in layers of watercolor paint from the lightest shade to the darkest without any mixing except on the paper itself.  The lighter color was put on first and then when it is dry, the next layer of darker shade.  The paint is not mixed but sometimes diluted with water to achieve a different intensity or value.  As you can see from the rocks on the right, the color is more intense because I have use it right from the watercolor tube.  The trick to this is not to mix any color and wait for one layer to dry before applying the next.
