Watercolor Ink Resist Painting Technique – Ballroom Passion watercolor art

Watercolor Ink resist - Ballroom Passion art painting

This Ink Resist painting is at stage 3 where tempera paint is being put on the whole painting following the lines were painted over using Pebo drawing gum or other masking fluid as shown in the above photo.  White tempera paint is what I use for this stage of ink resist and after the whole painting service is dry, the masking fluid is to be taken off to show the white of the paper underneath.  The result to obtain is a painting covered with whte tempera except for the lines where the masking fluid once was.

Ink resist painting - before washing stage

The next stage will be using the permanent india ink to fill and paint the whole piece of painting.  At this stage, the lines leave by the removed masking fluid will receive the permanent ink while the rest of the area will not because the ink will sit on top of the dried white tempera paint.  the next satage after the painting is dry, is to wash away the tempera together with the black permanent ink on top of it leaving the black lines.

Ink resist watercolor painting - Ballroom Passion #2 - Step 1 Sketching

This is another ink resist watercolor painting on the theme of ballroom dancing.  The photo above shows the sketch of the painting on 150 lb Arches watercolor paper.  Next step will be using a liquid resist to paint the lines  and areas that eventually will receive the black permanent ink.

Ink resist watercolor painting - Step 2 Paint lines with frisket.

The above photo shows step #2 which is outlining all the lines with frisket or other masking fluid.  These outlines will later turn into black lines when the permanent black ink is applied.  I use Pebeo drawing gum as my masking fluid.  After all the lines and areas that are covered with masking fluid are dried we can go on to the next step which is to paint the whole painting with white Tempera or any color tempera paint you desire.  Tempera is a water base paint which can easily wash off from the watercolor paper later.

Watercolor daily blog – Orchid watercolor painting

Watercolor painting blog - Orchid watercolor painting

The orchid watercolor painting has been added on more layers of watercolor paint to achieve a more solid background and darker background.   Winsor and Newton watercolor paint is used and the mixing of French Ultramarine Blue, Alizon Crimson and Burnt Sienna gives me darker and richer black for the background.  Layers of watercolor wash is also added on to the leaves behind the orchid.  I think another few layers of watercolor wash should be enough for the final painting and I think some colors in petals of the orchid should be lifted to show more white in contrast with the background.

Orchid watercolor painting

The orchid watercolor painting has more layers paintied on the backgraound.  The darker watercolor is painted on in layers by mixing Winsor Green, French Ultramarine Blue and Alizarin Crimson to get the deep black.  Each layer is painted after the previous one is dried.  There is still details on the orchid that needs to be added as well as more layers of the background to get a more solid black.

Continue with my Orchid watercolor painting last night doing the last two orchids in watercolor paint and also change the background to much deeper color.  The dark color was a mixture of green, blue and red to produce a deep dark background.  This is the first dark watercolor wash on top of the light ochre background and there will be many layers more so that it will be close to black watercolor.  I might eventually try some black watercolor in this case which I have never used before.  I think for a certain areas near the orchid I need the very deep dark to contrast the orchid.  I am trying to make the orchid pop out of the dark background.

Orchid Painting - 15 x 22 inches

I have gone back to continue with the orchid watercolor painting.  It is done on a 15 x 22 inches sheet of cold press watercolor paper using Winsor and Newton Professional watercolor paint.  The background was done in a wash as the orchid area being blocked off by frisket.  Later on the orchid was painted in one by one using gradated wash over several layers.  I noticed that the background could be darker especially around the orchid.

Daily watercolor – Ballroom Dance Watercolor Painting – Ink Resist Technique

Ballroom dance watercolor painting - Ink Resist Technique

Continue with the Ink Resist Technique on ballroom dance painting.  The painting is done on 150 lb watercolor paper.  After all the watercolor layers are dry, gouache is put on top of the watercolor for accent.  Little squres of gouache has been painted on top like a patteren effect and also along some of the ink resist lines.  This gives a much needed contrast and more interesting color effect for the finished painting.

Daily Watercolor Painting – Dance Passion – Ink Resist Technique

Dance Passion - Watercolor Ballroom Dance Painting

This is the Ballroom Dance Painting I did in Watercolor using the Ink Resist technique.  This is not the final painting.  The painting is at the stage where watercolor is being applied to the Ink Resist outline.  Windsor and Newton Professional watercolor is used here on 140 lb cold press Arches watercolor paper.  After all the watercolor layers are dry, I will use gouache paint on top to make it more interesting.  The final painting should be all finish by next post.  It is really fun to do this ink resist technique and I think I shall do more in the future.
