Toward the Sunrise – Daily watercolor painting

Toward the Sunrise

Started a watercolor painting today on cold press watercolor paper.  It is a landscape watercolor painting and the subject is sunrise with the title – Toward the Sunrise.  Started by pencil drawing the design.  A small value sketch can be made in this stage as to what the values should be put in for different painting areas.   I have decided to use the same method of watercolor painting because I like the result.  This time though I am going to experiment with my watercolor wash a bit before the splattering is to be put on.  I have been doing the sky and a few clouds and mountains using straightly watercolor splattering but tomorrow and over the weekend,  I shall try using a flat or gradated wash before I put on the splattering.  I like to compare the result of the two watercolor technique and notice any difference.

Broken Egg Shell – Daily Watercolor Painting Blog

Broken Egg Shell - 5 x 7 inches

Broken egg shell is my latest daily watercolor painting shown in my blog.  It is a small study of 5 x 7 inches watercolor on cold press paper.  I painted the whole egg shell with a water color masking fluid.  The one I use is called Pebeo Drawing Gum which is a grey removable liquid frisket for watercolor and is water soluble when wet, but dries waterproof.  The way to use it without damaging your brush is to wash your brush with soap and not rinse it but dip it in the frisket and after it is finished, wash it out immediately.  So with the masking fluid all dry, I painted the background and the shadow first.  Then the frisket is removed and the lighter part of the egg shell is painted next.  The broken egg shell is painted last with several watercolor wash and a splatter with the toothbrush.  Lots of fun on this broken egg shell watercolor study.

Watercolor Painting – Antique Corkscrew “Ladies Legs”

7.5 x 10 inches watercolor painting - Antique Corkscrew

7.5 x 10 inches watercolor painting - Antique Corkscrew

I am doing a watercolor painting of one antique corkscrew called ladies legs.  This a a very sort after item in the corkscrew collectors market.  I begin my daily watercolor painting painting the top of the corkscrew and then a flat wash is used on the legs.  It looks complicated but I think I have already pass the most difficult part and that should be the drawing of this item.  After this I have one more old corkscrew to do and then I should go back to painting fruits.

Chili Pepper Watercolor Painting – Red

Red Chili Pepper Watercolor Painting - 5 x 7 inches

Red Chili Pepper Watercolor Painting - 5 x 7 inches

This is a 5 x 7 inches watercolor painting of a red chili pepper.  I try to apply a wash for a background instead of leaving it white as many of my last paintings.  This is a still life using artist Winsor and Newton watercolor and is done on cold press watercolor paper.   This one was done by painting the chili pepper first and leave the background and the shadow for last.  I will try to do one where I paint the background first and leave the pepper and shadow for last.  Then I would like to do another one with an underpainting for the entire sheet of paper before I paint the subject and the background.  It would be a good exercise for me to learn the property of the transparent watercolor.

Still Life Watercolor Painting – Yellow Pear

Still Life Watercolor Painting - Yellow Pear

Still Life Watercolor Painting - Yellow Pear

I did a painting of a pear on 5 x 7 inch watercolor paper.  It is a cute little pear but it gives me lots of challange in this particular watercolor study.  First of all, I would like to make it more transparent by using wet in wet wash instead.  The color on the watercolor paper dries too quickly to give me good control of the medium.  It turns out ok but a little more transparent would be better.

Asian Persimmon – Lum Chee Watercolor Painting

Asian Persimmon (Lum Chee) Watercolor Painting

Asian Persimmon (Lum Chee) Watercolor Painting

I try to paint this asian persimmon or lum chee in watercolor.  It is a typical Asian fruit call lum chee in Chinese. It is around from August until this time of the year and has a sweet taste to the orange fruit inside.
This is painted on a 5 x 7 sheet of watercolor paper.  The control I need to learn is to mix (lightly) in the palette and paint (lightly) on the watercolor paper.  I try using the back of a piece of watercolor paper to test the paint before I put on the painting.  This helps me to feel and see the hue and intensity of the mixted watercolor paint.  I found it quite different when paintied on paper then it is on the palette.  It will eventually change to a duller color when the color is dry.  So by painting dabs of color on the scrap piece of watercolor paper I can gauge the overall match of the color to the subject, in this case the asian persimmon.
