Watercolor Daily Painting Blog – Landscape

Watercolor Landscape - 10 x 20 inches

Continuing with my landscape watercolor painting last night.  Did very little in the length of time I spend mostly taping, mixing the right colors and waiting for each layer to dry.  I very much like this watercolor technique although it is really time consuming and eye straining.

Today I like to talk about a watercolor site I found on the web the other day on contemporary watercolor and also devoted to the study of classical watercolor technique of past watercolor masters.  This is the watercolor web site of Nordic Watercolour Museum. The museum is in  Sweden and the museum contains permanent and temporary collections of watercolor paintings, guest studio, children studio and experimental workshop with advance technical equipment for study and research of watercolor.

Landscape Watercolor - 10 x 20 inches

Continuing on last night with my 10 x 20 inches landscape painting on Strathmore Watercolor Paper.  More layers of watercolor is being put on as mention on the previous blog.  I was searching on the web on the subject of artist business cards trying to get some idea to do my own.  I have come across a number of sites which are quite interesting.  I found an article by R. Garriottt on his own blog on Basic Art marketing Tools: The art business card.  It talks about the basic art marketing tool and gave examples of some of the art business cards from his friends.  Another site is by David Airey on A Few memorable business cards.  He is a graphic designer and has a blog in which valuable design tips are given.  Another site is called Business Card Observer which shows unique business cards from the past and present.  It will give artists a good starting point and many ideas in designing his or her own business cards.  Would also appreciate if you can share your interesting art business card with me and I will try to publish it in my daily watercolor painting blog at a later date.  Email me at dailywatercolor@gmail.com

Landscape Watercolor Painting - 10 x 20 inches

This is  a 10 x 20 inches watercolor painting on Strathmore 140 lb watercolor paper.  Strathmore paper is made in the US by Strathmore Artist Paper in MN and they have an artist enewsletter you can sign up under the Artist Newsletter column in their web site………..  www.strathmoreartist.com

Last night I have made a sketch plan on the larger 10 x 20 inches watercolor paper and started the watercolor painting by splattering on the top sky section and two of the trees.   With a mixture of Winsor and Newton Ultramarine Blue and Alizarin Crimson, the sky was painted in layers of the different color mixture while other areas are protected.  Several layers of watercolor paint was splatter onto the paper while each layer is completely dry.

Abstract Landscape Watercolor Painting – Final

Abstract Landscape Watercolor Painting

Managed to finished the abstract watercolor painting last night.  This is a 15 x 20 inches watercolor on cold press watercolor paper.  The process was lots of fun but I found it to require much concentration and imagination.  First of all the elements of design and shape has to be kept in mind all the time.  One must also keep an open mind during the whole process.  I call this an abstract but I find that it is something in between a really abstract representation of a subject and a realism.  It is not so much an abstract as those paintings that rely on pure lines shapes or color  to suggest meaning. This watercolor painting I did was more stylized than abstract or realistic.  It is fun.

Abstract Watercolor Painting – continue

Abstract Watercolor Painting - 15 x 20 inches

I worked on the abstract watercolor painting I started a day ago and have added some details in various areas.  Using a smaller brush, areas of green and branches were added.  A mixture of green and blue was used in layers and the aim is to try to paint and define space.  Suggestions is all that is needed for this because this is an abstract painting.  Looks like this would end up to be a landscape watercolor painting with suggestions of skies, mountain, trees and water.  Areas of the paper is purposely leave blank to show the white of the paper underneath.  More has to be painted over the weekend to complete this abstract watercolor and will publish the result in this daily watercolor painting blog.

Watercolor Painting – Flower Arrangement

7.5 x 10 inches Watercolor painting - Flower

7.5 x 10 inches Watercolor painting - Flower

I have finished this 7.5 x 10 inches watercolor painting this weekend.  The dark background is quite a challenge and I found that painting background is just as time consuming as doing the subject.  I have used gradated wash on most of the background with layers of watercolor to get it to the desire color and effect.  I need to practice more on the flat wash which I have use mostly on the background of this watercolor study.  Gradated wash is also used and it the the intensity of the dark color that I have problem with.  The mixing of various colors to get the right dark grey or black watercolor is so important.  Also I found the watercolor texture I try to do for the background is very challenging to me as well.  I should practice more on the basic of doing texture in watercolor painting.

Watercolor Painiting – Flower arrangement

Watercolor Painting - Flower Arrangement 7.5 x 1o inches

Watercolor Painting - Flower Arrangement 7.5 x 1o inches

Last night I started a watercolor painting and the subject is a flower arrangement.  I painted from the pictures I took last Sunday at Church.  It is s nice arrangement in a brown beige earth tone pot.   I saw sunlight hitting a few of the pews and took the arrangement and sit it on the edge of one of the pew with the light shinning on it.  It was quite nice as the light hit part of the pot as the background receive no illumination at all.  I took many shots turning the arrangement around for future reference for  watercolor painting.  The one watercolor I did last night was drawn on a 7.5 x 10 inches Arches cold press water color paper.  I started on the top left hand corner painting the green stems and work my way through to the bottom right hand flower bud.  It was a good watercolor exercise involving wet into wet wash as well as gradated wash.  Although there is still lots to be done on this flower arrangement watercolor painting but I am quite happy with the progress and I cannot wait to put on the dark wash for the background so that the flowers and buds will stand out from the white paper as they are suppose to.

Daily Watercolor Painting – Papaya Still Life

Papaya watercolor painting - 7.5 x 10 inches

Papaya watercolor painting - 7.5 x 10 inches

Last night I did  a 7.5 x 10 inch watercolor painting of a papaya that has been cut in half.  It was lots of fun and not as easy as I thought.  The difficult part was getting the right color intensity on the seeds and the skin.  Shadow always present a problem for me and this one is no exception.   First I painted the skin with Winsor Yellow from Windsor and Newton.  It  is a transparent cool but towards green watercolor paint.  I added a touch of green for some part of the papaya skin for the shade.  After it is dry, I painted the yellow outline on the fresh of the papaya.  This part of the watercolor painting is the most difficult because I try to use wet in wet wash and when I apply the orange color of the fresh after the yellow outline, the outline disappear into the orange hue.  For the  orange color I use Cadmium Red mixed with Alizan Crimson both of Winson and Newton Watercolor.  It took me a third wash to get the desire orange color on the flash of the papaya and some lifting of color on the outline to get back the yellow color underneath.  After it is dry, I continue painting the  seeds of the papaya.  I mixed Winsor Green (Blue Shade) with Alizarn Crimson to get the grey color for the lighter color seeds.  But before I painted the seeds, I painted the yellow color around it with Winsor Yellow mixed with New Gamboge.  The darker or shadow of the seeds were painted with a mixture of Winsor violet and Winsor Green which gives me a black.  It is a fun watercolor exercise after all.
