Ballroom dance art painting - Ink resist

Ink resist art techinque involves the use of permanent black ink, tempera paint, watercolor paint, gouache paint or acrylic paint.  At this stage after the watercolor goes through the wash and is completely dried, watercolor, gouache and or acrylic can be painted on.  I use watercolor and start to paint around the permanent ink lines left behind by the water bath.  Basic gradated wash is used with more emphesis on the color than the value.  Layes of watercolor is being applied one after the other when the previous layer is dry.

Ink Resist Art Technique - Washing away the Ink

Ink resist art techinque involves the use of permanent black ink, tempera paint, watercolor paint, gouache paint or acrylic paint.  Ink is being wash away using a water bath as show above.  With a little bit of scrubbing with a large brush, most of the ink is being washed away with another change of water.

The above photo shows the ink almost all gone.  Because I have used a green tempera paint as the layer between the paper and the permanent ink, a faint green underpainting is seen due to the fact that not the entire green color can be removed by washing.  A white tempera paint should be used if you want no background shade to be left on the ink resist painting.

At this stage, the watercolor paper is lifted out of the water bath and hang up to dry.  As show above, where the frisket was, a permanent black outline is shown.   Other areas of india ink and tempera has been washed away.  There is also hints of black shades on some areas of the painting which is normal and is a characteristic of the ink resist art technique.  If watercolor is used after it is dry, some of these black area will show underneath the watercolor paint.

After the paper is dried completely, watercolor, guache or acrylic paint can be applied.

Ink resist watercolor - Washing the Ink away using water bath

Ink resist art techinque involves the use of permanent black ink, tempera paint, watercolor paint, gouache paint or acrylic paint. After the permanent ink and all the ares are dry, the watercolor paper is put into a water bath to wash away the ink and tempera color.  The ink other than the ones on the lines can be removed because it has been painted on top of the tempera paint.

I have my watercolor paper inside a stainless steel pan which I got from my darkroom.  You can use any plastic tray the size of the paper or even do it in a bath tub.  I use a large brush for washing away the ink.

After several change of water, most of the ink is washed away and permanent lines (where the frisket was) beginning to show.   The ares on the corners need more work and a few more change of water should do the trick.

Ink resist art technique involves permanent ink, watercolor, tempera, gouache or acrylic………………I use liquid frisket for other lines instead of painting around it.  It proved to be an easier and faster method.  So I painted all the lines with frisket and after it is dry, I painted the tempera on the whole painting.  After the tempera is dry, all the frisket is removed showing the paper between the tempera.  Permanent black liquid ink is then painted on the entire painting with a foam brush.  This is the basic techique of Ink Resist art.

For illustration of the ink resist art technique, the above shows the tempera paint all covered by the black ink.  The lines where the frisket were was also black but the ink is permanently on to the paper and will be showing after the washing step.   The liquid fisket I use was Pebeo drawing gum.  The black ink is a speedball superball black india ink.  I remove the green tape around the painting and free it from the backing board.  The ink resist painting was left to dry and the next stage is to wash away all the black ink as well as most of the tempera paint.

Daily Watercolor - Ink Resist - Dance Passion 1

Ink resist art involves the use of watercolor, gouache, tempera or acrylic paints.  I have stared a new watercolor using ink resist technique.  I choose the subject dance passion and the ink reisist painting is representative so I think it might fit into the technique of ink resist.  First I choose a 140 lb cold press watercolor paper becuase of it’s durability to scrubbing and washing.  A heavier 300 lb watercolor paper can also be used.  The outline is done with a pencil and then tempera ink is to be painted on the watercolor paper except on the lines that you want to leave black.  I use green tempera paint because that is the only color I have.  I think the best color would be white tempera becuase it will not leave a faint color background after the ink has been washed away.  I will use this method of leaving the lines blank for the lower part of the painting and use a different method for the upper part.  I will tell you about this other method in my next post.  It involves using drawing gum or liquid frisquet.

Orchid watercolor painting - 15 x 22 inches

I am painting green plants again.  Although orchids are not green, it is a plant.   This  continuing orchid watercolor painting has been done on 15 x22 inches cold press watercolor paper.  Mostly wet in wet wash was used in the flower sepals and petals.  Some dry brush watercolor technique was used in the darker areas of the pollinia.   It was quite interesting when painting any subjuct especially the orchid.   As I study the orchid, I am beginning to know the various part of the plant and as I paint more orchids I hope I can get the feel of the property of the flower.   I think orchids are very fun and delicate plants to paint in transparent watercolor.

Orchid watercolor painting - background wash still wet with mask

Done a background watercolor wash with the mask on the orchid.  It is a gradated wash and was done using a mixture of Yellow Ochre and Quinacridone Gold.  It was done in serveral washes when the other one is dry.  I want to try a simple watercolor wash background for this painting.  The key to the gradated wash was to mix more color than you will need for the wash, have a clean bucket of water and use a big flat brush.  Those three things are essential for doing a great watercolor wash.  It is good to use a wide big brush for the wash if your watercolor paper is larger than 15 x 22 inches.  Below is the result with the mask removed.

Orchid Watercolor Painting - Pencil outline and mask

This  new 15 x 22 watercolor painting based on an orchid photo I have taken during my latest trip to Singapore last month.  The photo was taken in the Singapore Botanical Garden where many varities of orchid are grown and displayed.  I started this watercolor painting by sketching out the orchid onto the cold press watercolor paper.  Then a mask was used to cover the orchid area because I planned to do a watercolor wash for the whole background.   Pebeo drawing gum was used for the blocking out and the masking of the orchid.
