Watercolor Painting – Banana

Watercolor Painting - Banana

Watercolor Painting - Banana

Did a watercolor painting on a bunch of banana last night.  It was done on 7.5 x 10 inches Arches cold press watercolor paper.  Winsor Yellow watercolor paint was used for most of the banana in a wet in wet wash.  The most difficulty I encounter is in the shadows.  It was not easy because of the place of the lighting and the shadow made on the surface.  I should get back to finish my ballroom dance watercolor painting after this one.    I am trying to see what I can do to flatten the watercolor painting after it has been finished.

Chili Pepper Watercolor Painting – Still Life

Pepper 12 web

Chili Pepper Watercolor Painting using flat wash

My daily painting in watercolor is another red Chili Pepper.  If is purposely painted with watercolor in a different way and style mainly using flat wash.  It is drawn on a 5 x 7 inches 140 Arches Cold Press Watercolor paper.  I did this Chili Pepper Watercolor painting in layers of wash.  It is first started with the lightest one of the whole Pepper leaving out the very bright highlights.  Then when it is completely dry, I put on another layer taking in consideration of the tones and shapes of the subject.  Then layer upon layer of flat wash after every layer is completely dry creates the effect of color and gives its shape.  Simple outline on some of the lighter shapes is done last.  The stem of the pepper is done the same way.  I must say I have the most fun in doing the shadows.  It is the same application of flat wash one on top of another for this special watercolor painting effect.

Papaya Watercolor Painting

Papaya Watercolor Painting - 5 x 7 inches still life on cold press paper

Papaya Watercolor Painting - 5 x 7 inches still life on cold press paper

I did a still life watercolor painting of a papaya last night.  It was a 5 x 7 inches painting on Arches Cold Press Watercolor Paper.  I tried this little study on doing a underpainting of a wet into wet wash.  The color is applied very light with a yellowish tone where the papaya is going to be.  I found that this wet in wet wash gives me a feeling that I am not facing a blank white piece of watercolor paper.  This is a really quick wash and I even reuse some of my dried mixed paints from yesterday.  It was quite fun doing this wash and it is lots of fun.  As I apply the paint for the Papaya, I am using mostly a gradated wash and a streaked wash.   The streaked wash did not happen too good because of me starting out with the gradated wash, the paper is not wet enough.  I really should have paint this fruit using wet in wet wash which allows me more time and hence more control in my watercolor painting.  I hope you like how it turns out.

Pomegranate Watercolor Painting

Pomegranate Watercolor Painting

This one is a watercolor painting I did on a pomegranate.  I did it on a 5 x 7 inch cold press watercolor paper.  It was not too difficult as to the use of color because it is basically red.  A quick study which I just want to do something in one night such that I get some practice on my watercolor painting.  I found that this doing daily little paintings helps to maintain my interest in art and especially in watercolor.  I will get back into my bigger ballroom dancing painting tomorrow and I think I should not leave that for a long time otherwise I will be afraid to start it again thinking that I might ruin it.

Habanero Yellow Orange Chili Pepper Watercolor Painting

Habanero Yellwo Orange Chili Pepper Watercolor Painting

Did another one of the Habanero Chili Pepper in watercolor.  Love the orange color and it’s shape.  I am still struggling with the watercolor wash for the body of the pepper.  I would like to make the orange part more transparent and try a wet in wet wash next time instead.  Making mistake is how you learn.  In the library I  come across of a good book on watercolor wash by Joe Garcia.  I think I have loaned it out before and is called Mastering the Watercolor Wash.  It is a very informative book on different types of watercolor wash.  I think I might try to get a used one from ebay for my own reference.

Asian Persimmon – Lum Chee Watercolor Painting

Asian Persimmon (Lum Chee) Watercolor Painting

Asian Persimmon (Lum Chee) Watercolor Painting

I try to paint this asian persimmon or lum chee in watercolor.  It is a typical Asian fruit call lum chee in Chinese. It is around from August until this time of the year and has a sweet taste to the orange fruit inside.
This is painted on a 5 x 7 sheet of watercolor paper.  The control I need to learn is to mix (lightly) in the palette and paint (lightly) on the watercolor paper.  I try using the back of a piece of watercolor paper to test the paint before I put on the painting.  This helps me to feel and see the hue and intensity of the mixted watercolor paint.  I found it quite different when paintied on paper then it is on the palette.  It will eventually change to a duller color when the color is dry.  So by painting dabs of color on the scrap piece of watercolor paper I can gauge the overall match of the color to the subject, in this case the asian persimmon.

Back to painting chili pepper again. This time a red pepper using Winsor and Newton artist watercolor.  It is also a small one, only 2 /12 x 3 1/2 inches on watercolor paper.  Love the red color of this Jalapeno and the Scoville Heat Unit is around 5,000.

My first watercolor after a while of inactivity

Finally last night I did a little watercolor of a red pepper.  It is in the size of an Artist Trading Card 2 1/2″ x3 1/2″.  I did a quick sketch of the pepper which my friends has given me to make Hot Chili Sauce a week ago.  I took some photograph of the pepper at the time and the watercolor was painted from one of the phographs.  I use Winsor Red, Wiinsor Violet (Winsor and Newton) and some green as my basic color in my watercolor.  Shown here is the finished Red Pepper in Watercolor.
